In my freshman year of high school, I failed French. (Not a good start, but trust me — the story gets better.)

Years later, I decided to learn Brazilian Portuguese. Within 3 months, I was doing my lessons without speaking any English, and by 6 months, I was conversational.

So - why did it take me twice as long to fail French as it did to become conversational in Brazilian Portuguese?

Simply put: We don't teach kids their first language by cramming a bunch of toddlers into a classroom to study verb conjugations, so why should we expect it to work when we're learning our second, third, or fourth one?

My method was simple:

  • Audio first. No reading, no writing — just listening to dialogues and repeating them out loud from day one.
  • Vocabulary in parallel. Drills running alongside the audio to build out my word bank.
  • Real conversations. Once I had enough to string sentences together, I found tutors and language partners to practice with.

Once I started speaking, everything snowballed - new vocabulary, better grammar, a sharper accent.

I used the same method to learn Italian, and even used it to learn French.

Then, I had a trip to Hungary. As I started to learn the language, I found the resources available either didn't go deep enough into the language, weren't all that effective, or were downright incorrect - so I did what any self-respecting obsessive-compulsive would do, and I built my own course.
